School attended:: LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts
School activities: Dedication hardly begins to describe the type of commitment Toscano has made to singing or the amount of effort she has put into it. Throughout high school, she took voice lessons, went on auditions, toured and performed with a band, and rehearsed and practiced singing on a daily basis. And this was all done during her free time. Her time spent in school also consisted of music-related activities, from studying music to taking part in school performances to staying after school and even coming in on weekends.
Ritual/s before performing: Pia loved her "Grandpa" so much. She has his initials tattooed on her wrist, along with wings. "Before I perform I rub my wrists together 13 times," she said. "That's my lucky number."
Personal goals in life: Since the age of two, Toscano has been a performer — singer, dancer, actress. Born with a propensity to create and express art through song — thanks in part to her musically inclined parents and older sister — it wasn’t surprising that Toscano would choose a music-oriented life path
Other Talents: Dance school when she was two-and-a-half. She began performing in talent shows at 4 years old. By the time she was nine, Toscano had landed a part in a local church performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” At 13, Toscano became serious about her singing and became the official national anthem singer at her school, P.S./M.S. 207. She performed the song at every event and eventually at her graduation.
First Live Performance:
Favorite quote: "Go confidently in the diirection of your dreams, live the life you've imagined and don't worry about the things you have no control over"
Musical Influences: Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, Ella Fitzgerald, Brian Mcknight, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Barry White, Brian Adams, Andrea Boccelli
Formal Training: Pia Toscano comes from a musical family and began dancing and singing at a very young age. She was enrolled in dance class at two-and-a-half and by the age of four she was already performing in talent shows.
Music before Idol: Pia continued her pursuit of music, including a part in a local church performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” but didn’t take it seriously until the age of thirteen when she became the exclusive singer of the national anthem at her school. She sent out audition tapes and landed the national anthem gig for the Brooklyn Cyclones, one of the New York Mets’ minor league team. Pia Toscano performed the national anthem as well as “God Bless America” several times a year for three years as well as their post-season appearances. Those performances cemented in Pia’s mind that singing was what she wanted to do for a living. She told The Queens Chronicle in 2008, “That’s when I felt like this is what I really should be doing.”
